Wash hands and obtain equipment.. Assess need for suctioning. Suction tracheostomy (refer to skills sheet) Remove old dressing and discard in gloves with suction catheter. * Prepare equipment using appropriate technique. (Add normal saline and peroxide to appropriate sections with clean gloves) * Apply sterile gloves to handle all sterile supplies. Remove inner cannula with non-dominant hand and place in the hydrogen peroxide basin. Clean inner cannula with hydrogen peroxide, rinse with normal saline, and reinsert securing locking mechanism. Clean around incision site and faceplate using hydrogen peroxide. Rinse with normal saline. Slip new dressing in place. Replace ties if soiled. Do not remove old ties until new ties are in place. Discard equipment and wash hands. Chart procedure and observations.
