Critical Item Checklist

NASOTRACHEAL SUCTIONING

_____1. Wash hands and obtain equipment..
_____2. Assess need for suctioning.
_____3. Explain procedure to client.
_____4. Place client in proper position.
_____5. * Open sterile suction kit maintaining sterility of catheter and gloves.
_____6. *Attach suction catheter to suction tubing. Dominant hand must remain sterile.
_____7. Pre-oxygenate client, if indicated.
_____8. Assess nares for patency.
_____9. Pre-lubricate catheter.
_____10. * Insert catheter into nares and advance gently but quickly – do not apply suction.  (Insert to appropriate length or until resistance is met.)
_____11. * Withdraw catheter by rotating and applying suction.  Do not suction more than 10 - 15 seconds for entire procedure (insertion and removal).
_____12. Flush catheter with saline.
_____13. Oxygenate client and allow a rest period before repeating procedure.
_____14. Suction oral cavity.
_____15. Remove catheter and place inside glove and dispose of properly.
_____16. Assess effectiveness of suctioning.  Reapply oxygen source.
_____17. Provide oral care.  Wash hands.
_____18. Chart procedure.
